  • Call the companies where you have outstanding debts or bills and work out a payment plan. You may ask for a reduction in your late fees as well. Although not all companies will grant such requests, some will once they see that you are taking responsibility for your credit problem and are seeking ways to correct it. Once you have been paying your bills on time for a while, you can even ask companies to remove dings from your credit report. Again, while companies do not have to do this, some will in order to keep your business.

  • Cut back on spending. There are probably many things that you buy yourself that you do not really need. By living more simply and reducing how much money you spend, you will be able to have more money to pay off your debts. Over time, paying more towards your bills and debts will dramatically improve your credit reputation.

  • Consider ways to generate more money. Whether you sell off items you no longer need, rent out your vacation home, or work overtime for a few months, earning extra money each month will give you more money to pay down your debts.

  • Reward yourself for doing well. If you pay all your bills on time for a month or pay down part of a debt, give yourself a small reward. This can be something that you buy yourself or give yourself. A reward will encourage you to keep repairing your credit and will make you feel positive about the financial changes you are making in your life - just make sure that you are not getting yourself deeper into debt by spending too much!

  • Set aside a specific time and place for paying bills each week. This will make paying bills on time automatic and will help ensure that you pay your bills regularly.

If Your Emotional Response is Serious

If you find that you cannot easily cope with your credit issues, you may need to seek professional help from a qualified doctor. If, for example, you find that you feel extremely depressed about your financial situation or have thoughts of harming yourself or others, seek professional help. Prolonged stress and depression can be damaging to your health and can put you at risk. Staying financially healthy is very possible and there are plenty of things you can do to fix your credit. However, you need to stay mentally and physically healthy in order to prevent additional complications to your situation. Your doctor or trained therapist may be able to help you find some perspective and gain some hope.

Having low credit ratings is not a happy situation. Today, more therapists and financial experts are realizing that bad credit has many emotional effects as well. There are many ways that you can deal with a bad credit report emotionally so that you health is safeguarded. By taking care of yourself as well as your money, you increase the odds that you will be able to get yourself out of debt and enjoy a prosperous future.
