Identity Theft
The crime of identity theft occurs when an imposter acquires and uses the name, Social Security number, and other personal information of a victim for fraudulent purposes that might include the opening of credit account, the use of existing credit accounts (typically through stolen credit cards or credit card account numbers), or the acquisition of other benefits associated with the identity of the victim.
The activities of an identity thief can ruin the victim's credit rating and reputation quickly and the damage can take months or even years to resolve. It is recommended that consumers carefully monitor the charges that appear on their credit cards and routinely review their credit reports to catch such fraudulent activity. It is also a good idea not to let your credit card out of your sight as many instances of identity theft have occurred as a result of card usage in retail outlets or restaurants. Shredding mail and receipts is also an effective countermeasure.
