Credible agency investigates credit identity thefts
Wisconsin residents have something to be happy about. There is a new office set up by the state for protection of privacy six months ago. Currently it's handling 26 cases of presumed identity theft.
Cases will be sent to the district attorney's office for prosecution said Janet Jenkins of the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Presently there are only three employees on the agency's staff.
Jenkins reported that number of calls and walk - ins was increasing daily as more people found out about this agency and wanted to try it.
DATCP and the state Department of Financial Institutions joined together in a combined effort to create this office which opened in April.
This office was the proposed solution to the growing problem of identity theft.
Speaking for Gov. Jim Doyle Matt Canter said that the state was using this office as one likely way to crack down on identity theft. This year three further approved measures had been implemented which barred phone records from being shared, allowed individuals to freeze their credit reports and compelled credit officials into notifying their customers if the latter's personal credit info got lost or was stolen.
Jenkins said that previously this work was never done in an out front organized fashion. This is why the office was created so that people had a place to come to for help and guidance.
