Symantec And Verisign To Fight Identity Theft Online

In a partnership arrangement announced on Tuesday, October 10, Symantec and VeriSign have joined forces in a project designed to fight identity theft online. For its part of the arrangement, Symantec will now support VeriSign Identity Protection or VIP. This security technology allows Internet users to use a single password to safely access multiple websites.

The VeriSign Identity Protection tool is a two-factor method of authentication that will become an integrated feature in future releases of Symantec's well-known line of Norton security software products. Working in partnership, Symantec and VeriSign will market this combined offering to such entities as online retailers, banks, and other similar customers.

Judy Lin, executive vice president and general manager of VeriSign's security services said, "VeriSign has a long history of protecting and securing digital identities on the Internet and Symantec has a long history of protecting consumers and their digital information. With a layered security approach, across users, desktops, and the network infrastructure, VeriSign and Symantec can enable the strongest security with the most convenience."

In trading on Tuesday shares of Symantec picked up approximately 35 cents to close at $20.75 a share. VeriSign, on the other hand, dropped some forty cents to a level of $20.04.

Both companies, however, have a proven track record in providing computer and Internet related security measures, and should perform well in partnership, especially as fears of identify theft online are at an all time high in the United States and broadband access to the Internet continues to spread to more American homes and businesses.
